When the federal government warned a retirement community on the East End of Long Island that it planned an audit, disaster struck a dozen of the housekeepers who cleaned the residents’ apartments. Immigrants unable to provide the proper documents lost jobs that paid relatively well and provided health insurance. Now they’re park of the underground economy, struggling to make ends meet.
